Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has confirmed that the police have arrested an officer who fatally shot businessman Onyeka Ibe aka Onyi Gadget over alleged bribe.
Onyi Gadget was allegedly killed on Wednesday by Inspector Ebri Ubi on Ugbolu-Illah Road during a stop-and-search exercise over an alleged N400 bribe.
In a statement by the governor’s chief press secretary Olisa Ifeajika, Okowa sued for calm, and appealed to residents not to take laws into their hands but should allow the police to conduct a probe into the incident.
He said the police inspector, who allegedly fired the shot that killed the businessman, was promptly arrested and is currently being detained at the command headquarters in Asaba.
In a statement signed by the state police spokesperson Bright Edafe, the commissioner of police Muhammed Ali “expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of late Mr. Onyeka Ibe, who was reportedly shot dead by Ubi, while on Stop-and-Search duty along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State.”
According to the statement, CP Ali, “On receipt of the sad news, immediately ordered the arrest and detention of the errant police officer and directed his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba where he has further ordered for a thorough and speedy investigation.”
