With the unemployment level in Nigeria skyrocketing, many young people are embracing skit-making to fend for themselves and their families.
The emergence of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube among others has no doubt helped their cause.
In March 2022, digital analytics firm Dataleum listed skit-making as the third largest entertainment industry in Nigeria with a net worth of about N50 billion.
Dataleum released a quarterly report on skit-making on Wednesday, April 19.
According to the report, the top 10 skit makers with the highest views on YouTube in the first quarter of 2023 are: Sam Spedy – 36.87m views; Mark Angel – 35.63m views; Taaooma – 15.70m views; Brainjotter – 15.68m views; and Sabinus – 15.32m views.
The other five include Broda Shaggi – 15.8m views; Sirbalo – 13.32m views; Zicsaloma – 10.88m views; Mr Macaroni – 10.73m views; and Kiekie – 8.78m views.
Among female skit makers in the first quarter of 2023, Taaooma emerged as one with the highest views on Instagram with a total of 22.2m views, 28 skits, 2.6m likes, and 117,500 comments.
Second on the list is Kiekie. She amassed a total of 21.4million views, 2.5m likes, 81,500 comments from 29 skits posted.
Actress Bimbo Ademoye gained 15.9m views, with 22 skits posted, along with 70, 200 comments and 1.9m likes.
Others in the top five include Phoebe with 9.7m views, 984,000 likes, 50 comments with a total of 45 skits followed by Ashmusy with 7.2m views, 607,100 likes, 26,000 comments and 12 skits.
Among the male folk, Mark Angel emerged number one skit maker on Instagram in the first quarter of 2023 with 43.7 million views.
Sabinus follows with 35m views.
Others in the top five include Broda Shaggi with 30.3m views followed by Agent of Laughter with 22.6m views and Layiwasabi with 19.3m.
