Senior pastor of The Covenant Nation Poju Oyemade has knocked off claims that gospel singer Mercy Chinwo charges huge amounts to sing at churches.
A Catholic priest in the Abuja Archdiocese Rev. Fr. Chinenye Oluoma had in a viral video alleged that Mercy charges N10 million to sing when invited.
“We have made religious worship expensive. If I have to bring Mercy Chinwo to come here and sing, how much will I pay her? How much does a gospel artiste of Mercy Chinwo’s status charge to come to an event or in a church, it has reached N10 million now,” Oluomo said.
“This is the tragedy that we have turned Christianity into, that an artiste will come to a church and lead in ten minutes praise and worship for N10 million, N5 million. So if that particular artiste doesn’t sing ‘Jesus you love me too much’, that means God doesn’t love you too much?”
The priest said gospel singers are now copying the style of the “world”.
However, reacting to the claim, Oyemade who is also the convener of The Platform Nigeria said on Twitter on Thursday that he gave Mercy an amount at his discretion when she sang recently at his church in Lekki, Lagos.
“Mercy Chinwo sang at our service at Lekki last Sunday and the honorarium we gave was at our discretion. She made NO formal charges,” he said.
