Filmmaker Bolanle Austen-Peters has dedicated her Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) awards to the family of the late Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
The award ceremony was held on Saturday at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos.
Funmilayo: The Lioness of Lisabi won the best screenplay and best film and the awards were dedicated to the family of the late activist.
The event was attended by film practitioners like Kunle Afolayan, Segun Arinze, Rita Dominic, Uche Jombo, Kate Henshaw, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Lateef Adedimeji, Mo Bimpe and AFRIFF founder Chioma Ude.
“This film tool so much out of me, we didn’t have a budget but we believe in telling the story, a woman who single handedly confronted international and local and told them enough is enough and this woman was able to raise for phenomenal children including the great Fela Anikulapo-Kuti,” Bolanle said while receiving the award.
Bolanle also applauded Joke Silva and Kehinde Bankole for playing the older and younger Ransome-Kuti.
Funmilayo was an educator and women’s rights activist.
She died on April 13 1978 at age 77.
