Awujale of Ijebuland Oba Sikiru Adetona has selected the joint chief medical director and co-chairman of Eko Hospital Sonny Kuku as the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland.
The title means leader of commerce and industry in Ijebu. It is the highest non-hereditary title an Ijebu indigene can aspire to.
PUNCH reported on Monday that sources close to the Ijebu Council of Chiefs revealed the Awujale’s plan.

The first Ogbeni Oja was the late industrialist Adeola Odutola. The position has been vacant since Odutola died in 2015.
On Kuku’s selection, one of the sources said, “He has been the Joint Chief Medical Director and Co-Chairman at the EKO Hospital (Ekocorp Plc) which he co-founded in 1978 and is the only quoted hospital in the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the first Federal Government recognised private tertiary hospital. The Iwuye ceremony shall be announced soonest.”
