Abia State University (ABSU) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU branch, have reacted to the recent marriage proposal by a lecturer in the university to a student.
Wisdom Anucha, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology, proposed to a student in her classroom on February 14.
The proposal was caught on camera and it immediately went viral.
There were concerns from some members of the public if it was ethical for a lecturer to be romantically involved with a student.
However, the university’s spokesman Chijioke Nwogu told Premium Times that it was a private affair.
“I think this is a personal matter. I am not in a position to speak about his (the lecturer’s) relationship,” Mr Nwogu said.
Also, the ASUU leadership at the university said Anucha did not breach the union’s ethics and university regulations.
“It (the proposal to the student) is not against our principle. It is a matter of choice,” chairperson of ASUU in the institution Chidi Mbah told the online newspaper on Thursday.
“On the part of the university law, to the best of my knowledge, there is no law that is against that.”
