The late former governor of Ondo State Rotimi Akeredolu has been laid to rest in his hometown Owo.
Akeredolu’s remains were interred on Friday at a private ceremony attended only by his immediate family members led by his wife Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu.
The former governor died on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, while receiving treatment for prostate cancer at a hospital in Germany.
Earlier in the day, St. Andrews Cathedral on Imola Street, Owo was packed full of dignitaries who witnessed the funeral service.
Among the dignitaries were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, former Ondo State governor Olusegun Mimiko, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and his Lagos State counterpart Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Also present were Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Ganduje, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, former Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun, and minister of marine and blue economy, Gboyega Oyetola, among others.
Leader of the Synagogue Church of All Nations Pastor Evelyn Joshua was also present alongside one of her daughters.
Akeredolu’s interment marks the beginning of the end of the funeral programme kick-started on Thursday, February 15 with a crusade.
A friendly football match will be played on Saturday, February 24 at Akure Township Stadium in Akeredolu’s honour.
The family will then wrap up the funeral with a thanksgiving service at St. Andrews Cathedral on Sunday, February 25.
