The family and friends of the late banker Herbert Wigwe converged on Friday night at the newly established Wigwe University in the Isiokpo community of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State for the wake.
Wigwe, wife and son and a former group chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, died in a helicopter crash that occurred near a border town between California and Nevada in the United States on February 9.
Their bodies arrived Isiokpo earlier in the day.
Many of the attendees including the host, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, were dressed in colourful ‘aso ebi’, a local parlance for similar outfits.
Also present and dressed in ‘aso ebi’ was businessman Aliko Dangote, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Wigwe’s business partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede among others.
Others who attended the wake were former presidential candidate Peter Obi, minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and former governorship candidate in Rivers, Tonye Cole.
The funeral rites for the Wigwe family commenced on Monday, March 4, 2024.
The combined funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9 at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Lion of Judah Parish, Isiokpo, at 10am. Private interment will follow immediately.
