Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Saturday met gymnastics champion Stephanie Onusiriuka in Abuja.
Mr Obi revealed this in an Instagram post on Sunday.
Onusiriuka got national attention in August 2022 when at age 11 she won a gold medal at the African Junior Gymnastics Championship in South Africa.
On his meeting with the athlete, Obi wrote: “Yesterday in Abuja, I and my dear brother, Gov Alex Otti @alexottiofr, met the wonder girl of gymnastics, who is making Nigeria proud on the global stage. I recall in August 2022 when she won a Gold Medal at the African Junior Gymnastics Championship in South Africa at the age of 11.
“I rejoiced with her and encouraged her to remain committed to deepening her skills. I am glad that she has remained consistent and has continued to climb higher, her ladder of success, by winning more medals and awards.
Mr Ibu spread happiness with his character — Peter Obi
“We congratulated her and Governor Otti offered to help and support her in her future endeavours. In Nigeria, we will continue to nurture and encourage young people like her, to develop their skills to be able to stand tall on the global stage.”
Back in August 2022, Obi sent a congratulatory message to Onusiriuka following her feat in South Africa.
“Our Dear Stephanie Onusiriuka has just written her name in gold. Having won a Gold Medal at the African Junior Gymnastics Championship in Pretoria, South Africa at age 11. Hearty congratulations on achieving such a great feat.
“Here is wishing her greater and lofty heights in the future. May her success story inspire our younger ones to dream more, dare more and do more in their lives,” he wrote on X.
Onusiriuka is said to have started gymnastics on her own when she was two years old.
In October 2018, she started professionally with TIG Gymnastics at the National Stadium, Abuja.
