Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has lost his mother.
Although the 24-year-old has not made a public statement on the development, his younger sister Princess Chukwueze broke the news on social media on Good Friday, saying her mum died on March 28.
Princess, a 22-year-old influencer and nursing student residing in the UK, posted a photograph of herself and her mother on Instagram Story and wrote that her mother had “gone”.
“Woke up today and found out yesterday wasn’t a dream and you are truly gone and you left me,” she wrote, “I miss you so much, I don’t know how to process this.”
Chukwueze has since changed his Instagram profile photo to an image of himself and his mother.
Samuel Chukwueze gets hero’s welcome at AC Milan
Last year, Chukwueze, who plays for AC Milan, said his mother didn’t initially support his football career.
He said his mum wanted him to focus on his academics.
“In Africa, developing talent was very hard. But through hard work and God’s grace, everything worked perfectly fine. I encountered so many obstacles before I became who I am today,” he told Milan TV.
“It wasn’t easy. My mum didn’t allow me to play football. African mothers believe you have to study. But things changed. You know, when God says ‘This is your destiny,’ and this is your destiny.
“My mum burnt my boots and everything. But right now, she believes in football. Before, she didn’t trust the process but now she trusts the process.”
