Police in Imo State have arrested Chinasa Nwaneri, a former special adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on special duties, along with three other individuals.
In a statement on Tuesday, the spokesman of Imo State Police Command Henry Okoye confirmed that Nwaneri was in police custody.
He said the governor’s former aide was arrested over allegations of “malicious damage, fraudulent activities, obtaining money under false pretence and illegal use of government power/authority to harass, intimidate and frustrate the citizens of Imo State”.
Nwaneri was reportedly apprehended on Sunday at a hotel.
Sources quoted by PUNCH said the governor on assumption of duty as commissioner for lands discovered through some documents that his signature was allegedly forged by Nwaneri and others.
Last year, a group known as the Dozie-Mezie Owerri Association accused Nwaneri of leading the assault on the national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joe Ajaero.
Ajaero was picked up on November 1, 2023, from the Imo council secretariat of the NLC by police officers. According to the NLC, he was beaten and blindfolded after the arrest.
