South East Governors’ Forum has condemned the attack on soldiers at a checkpoint in Aba, Abia State on Thursday morning which left two dead.
It was gathered that about 15 gunmen enforcing sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) attacked soldiers at about 8a.m. at a military checkpoint in Obikabia Junction.
A military patrol truck was also set on fire. Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.
The sit-at-home order which disrupted business activities in the south-east region was to mark the annual Biafra Day.
Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Owerri, chairman of the forum, Hope Uzodimma, who is also Imo State governor, described the attack as unfortunate.
He said, “On behalf of my brother governor’s in the South East Governors’ Forum, I condemn that incident and loss of the lives of soldiers who were on their duty posts.
“Without any provocation, they were attacked by the men of the underworld.
“The unfortunate thing is that it is going to act as a major setback to the peace process being pursued by the governors from the zone with the Federal Government, security agencies and other critical stakeholders on how best to resolve the problem of security in the region.”
According to him, the incident will also portray south east people in bad light.
The governor condoled with the Chief of Army Staff and the families of soldiers who lost their lives in the attack.
