Actress Yvonne Jegede has sparked debate after expressing support for her colleague Yul Edochie who has faced criticism for marrying actress Judy Austin while still married to May.
In a recent interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, Yvonne defended Yul’s actions, stating that while his decision may be controversial, it is not illegal.
She highlighted that many of his critics come from polygamous backgrounds themselves.
“You see this Yul Edochie ehnnn, 99% of people abusing him are from second wives, third wives, fourth wives and fifth wives. Sometimes, wife that the family doesn’t know about,” she remarked.
Yvonne also questioned the double standards in societal reactions, comparing Yul’s situation to that of Regina Daniels, who is in a polygamous marriage with billionaire Ned Nwoko.
“Why do people condemn Yul while they praise Regina Daniels?” she asked.
Her comments triggered backlash on social media. Many Nigerians, who had previously sympathised with Yvonne over her own marriage struggles, expressed their disagreement.
One netizen, identified as Faith, criticised Yvonne, saying she was justifying infidelity. “Yul did not marry a second wife. He cheated on his wife with Judy for several years until Judy became pregnant for him and he tried to shove it on his wife,” Faith argued. “Are you justifying cheating now? Are you saying Yul has treated May right? How about consent to polygamy?”
In response to the backlash, Yvonne maintained her stance, noting that the vitriol directed at Yul was misplaced. “What he did was wrong but you people abusing him are now the problem,” she said, underscoring the complexity of the issue and calling for more measured reactions.
