A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Sokoto on Friday ordered that Shafi’u Tureta, a former special assistant to ex-governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal, should be remanded at a correctional centre.
Mr Tureta is accused of circulating injurious falsehood and as such defaming Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu and his wife Fatima Aliyu through social media.
He is alleged to have committed the offences on July 18, 2024.
The police prosecutor Inspector Abdurahman Mansur told the court that the accused circulated a video of the governor’s wife, spreading money on the ground during her birthday ceremony.
Tureta was also accused of sharing a document that indicated that Governor Aliyu failed his senior secondary school examination, scored F9 and is incapable of speaking English.
Magistrate Fatima Hassan ordered he should be remanded, saying the nature of the charges requires a formal bail application, not the oral one done by the defence lawyer Al’Mustafa Abubakar.
The case was adjourned to September 18, 2024.
