The Presidency has said that the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Olayemi Cardoso was not asked to resign as reported in the media.
The contentious report claimed that President Bola Tinubu issued the directive to Mr Cardoso before departing for China, despite efforts by influential Yoruba leaders to keep him in the position.
Cardoso has faced criticism over economic challenges and the free fall of the naira.
Special adviser to the president on information and strategy Bayo Onanuga said on Monday in a post on X that the report was a “bundle of lies.”
“It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign,” Onanuga said while dismissing the report.
A seasoned economic and development policy advisor, Cardoso was nominated by Tinubu on September 15, 2023, and assumed office as CBN governor on September 22, 2023.
