I got married to avoid backlash for selling sex products – Jaruma

Self-proclaimed sex therapist Hauwa Jaruma Muhammad, has revealed that she got married primarily to ease the sale of her sex products, aiming to avoid public backlash.

During an interview on the Issues and Society podcast, Jaruma explained that her decision was driven by the intense criticism she faced from the northern community for promoting aphrodisiacs while being single.

According to her, the backlash was rooted in cultural and religious concerns particularly with her Muslim faith and unmarried status.

She shared that these factors led her to make a strategic decision to marry, claiming that her former husband was fully aware of her intentions.

“There was a massive heat from the north because I was selling sex products as a single lady,” she stated. “Being a Muslim and unmarried, people questioned why a single woman should teach others about bedroom matters and make money from it.”

Jaruma highlighted the challenges she faced, but also noted the lucrative nature of the industry. “The sex industry is worth billions. It’s not going anywhere, and I made N760 million in just three years,” she said.

Determined not to abandon her thriving business, Jaruma concluded that marriage would silence the critics. “I realised that if marriage was the issue, I might as well do it.

“So, I got married, not for love or attraction, but to escape the pressure,” she admitted. “I got married just a month after meeting him, and I was upfront about my reasons. He knew it wasn’t about love, but about the societal pressure.”

During the interview, Jaruma also accused celebrity fashion designer Veekee James of marrying solely for content creation.

The sex therapist was married to Ross Fahad Isabor between 2018 and 2021, and they share a child.

In 2022, Isabor revealed that they had divorced long ago and warned Jaruma against using his name to promote her business.

Additionally, Jaruma made headlines in 2022 when Senator Ned Nwoko arrested her for alleged defamation. Shortly after, rumours surfaced suggesting she had been involved in substance abuse, though these were not substantiated.
