Notable figures attended the service of songs for the late president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu on Wednesday at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, Vanguard Newspapers publisher Sam Amuka-Pemu, former Ogun State governor Segun Osoba, Senator Ben Obi, former Chief of General Staff Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and Prof. Anya Anya were among those present at the event.

Iwuanyanwu, publisher of Champion Newspapers, died on July 25, 2024, aged 82.

Mr Sanwo-Olu, in his tribute, praised Iwuanyanwu as a “detribalised Nigerian” and a patriot who was committed to the progress of not only the Igbo people but the nation at large.

“He embodied excellence and left a lasting legacy. Chief Iwuanyanwu built a powerful business conglomerate, gave hope to the less privileged, and empowered youths through his sports initiative, Iwuanyanwu Nationale. We are not mourning today but celebrating the remarkable life of a true Nigerian,” Sanwo-Olu remarked.

Anyaoku described Iwuanyanwu as an outstanding patriot and a versatile businessman who founded over 20 companies.

“He was a true icon who exemplified hard work and integrity. His death is a huge loss,” Anyaoku said, recalling their joint efforts in the development of Nigeria’s southeast region just months before Iwuanyanwu’s passing.

In an emotional tribute, Iwuanyanwu’s first daughter Nwadiuto Iheakanwa described him as a superhero who valued and supported his daughters. Reflecting on their close bond, she expressed gratitude for his resilience and love throughout his life, saying, “He has been through a lot in politics, business, and health, yet he remained strong. Please, keep praying for us.”
