Actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has thrown his support behind Afrobeats star Davido, following widespread criticism over the singer’s recent remarks on Nigeria’s struggling economy.
In a video shared on Instagram on Thursday, Kanayo urged Nigerians to respect Davido’s right to express his views, dismissing calls for an apology.
He emphasised that the singer’s comments were made in good faith to highlight the plight of ordinary Nigerians.
“Nigerians, make una leave Davido alone about the comment he made; it’s freedom of speech and he made it in good faith.
“It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria. We need to build a better Nigeria,” the actor said.
Addressing demands for an apology he added, “Some people say he should apologise; apologise for what?
“He’s a Nigerian, and he made his statement in good faith. Those who criticise us want the best out of us. Davido and his family can feed well, but he speaks for other Nigerians who cannot.”
The controversy began after Davido, in a US interview, cautioned African Americans against relocating to Africa, citing Nigeria’s dire economic conditions as an example.
The statement has since sparked massive backlash, with critics accusing him of misrepresenting the country.
Notable public figures, including TVC presenter Akashat Nymat, Patrick Doyle, and Reno Omokri, have called out the singer, arguing that his remarks undermine Nigeria’s image globally.
Politician Joe Igbokwe had also called on Davido to apologise.
