The camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi have denied rumour of discussions about a joint ticket for the 2027 election.
Speculation about a potential alliance surged on social media after photos and videos surfaced showing Atiku hosting Obi to breakfast at his residence in Adamawa State.
Atiku shared a video of the meeting on his official X account with the caption: “It is breakfast time with my friend, #PeterObi, in the ‘land of beauty.’”
The video showed the two leaders, accompanied by others, seated at a dining table.
The meeting comes months after PDP deputy national spokesman Ibrahim Abdullahi suggested on a live political programme that leading opposition figures, including Atiku, Obi and NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso might consider forming a merger to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Responding to the rumour, Atiku’s spokesman Paul Ibe clarified that the meeting was simply a reunion between old friends.
“The university was founded by Atiku Abubakar, who was more like his host. But people think it is because of politics. We all know our friends. The truth is that politics cannot separate friends,” he said.
Obi’s media aide Ibrahim Umar also dismissed the speculation, describing the breakfast meeting as unrelated to politics.
“They just invited him (Obi) to deliver a speech there. It has nothing to do with politics…,” he explained.
