Bello El-Rufai, eldest son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and a current member of the House of Representatives for Kaduna North Federal Constituency, has refuted rumours claiming that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided his residence and discovered vast sums of money and drugs.

The allegations, which have been widely circulated on social media, include claims that the EFCC uncovered $800 million, ₦700 billion in cash, and ₦1 trillion worth of drugs at his property in Kaduna.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Bello described these accusations as “defamatory” and a calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation and distract him from his public service duties.

Bello clarified that he does not own a private residence in Kaduna but resides in his family home in Unguwar Sarki which has been his place of residence since birth.

In his statement, Bello said: “My constituents that I represent know what will happen if I was blessed with such figures. For those sponsoring these ignorant attacks, I assure you that we will continue to serve the people, and we will continue to enjoy how it annoys them; adding quality, frank, and honest representation is here to stay in Kaduna North.”

He also highlighted that the image being circulated as evidence of the alleged raid was originally published in Vanguard in April 2017, further discrediting the claims.

Bello disclosed that his legal team is preparing to take action against media organisations that propagated the false claims. He stated that any damages awarded would be used for the benefit of his Kaduna North constituency.

The EFCC has also discredited reports of the raid.
