Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appealed to landlords and property owners in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area (LGA) to refrain from increasing rents for houses and shops following the completion of new road infrastructure.
Mr Sanwo-Olu made this appeal on Monday during the inauguration of the Abiola/Ajayi/Ogba and Obawole/Iju-Ishaga roads, which include a newly constructed bridge. The project, spanning 643 meters, commenced on October 24, 2022, and was designed to address longstanding community challenges, including flooding and poor commuting conditions.
Speaking at the event, the governor emphasised that the infrastructure was intended to improve residents’ quality of life, not to burden them with increased costs.
“I want to make an appeal to landlords and landowners, do not increase your rents and land, the essence of the infrastructure built is to bring relief to the people and not burden residents,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He also called for proper maintenance of the new bridge, urging community leaders to discourage residents from using the structure as a dumping ground.
In addition to the Ifako-Ijaiye road project, the governor inaugurated the Alapere pedestrian bridge in Kosofe LGA. The bridge was reconstructed after being damaged by an articulated vehicle in December 2023.
