Actor Yemi Solade has reacted to the stampede that claimed several lives during a funfair organised by Queen Naomi Silekunola’s foundation, Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS), in Ibadan.
Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Yemi shared the event flier alongside a sombre image of a candle extinguished with smoke rising.
The image bore the words, “Christmas gifts tragedy in Ibadan.”
He captioned the post, “May The Infantile Souls Of The Little Ones Rest In Absolute Peace. Amen!
“This is a classic example of NEGLIGENCE and WISHY-WASHY Event Planning.
“A confirmation of the HARSH SOCIO-ECONOMIC realities of the Present-Day Nigerian 🇳🇬 state, where POVERTY has been WEAPONISED.
“N5000 caused human lives in IBADAN yesterday. So so so so TRAGIC/SAD/DEBASING/DEHUMANISING.”
On Wednesday, several children were reportedly killed following a stampede at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, venue of the funfair.
A resident told QEDNG that the event gained attention after Queen Naomi appeared on a radio programme hosted by Hamzat Oriyomi on Agidigbo FM on Tuesday.
The radio station has since issued a statement clarifying its role as a partner and not the organiser.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde announced that the organisers had been taken into custody.
He urged the public to remain calm, promising that anyone connected to the tragedy would be held accountable.
As of press time, Queen Naomi has yet to issue a public statement regarding the incident.
