Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampedes during palliative distributions in Ibadan, Abuja and Anambra, urging Nigerians to support the victims and their families.
In a Christmas message issued on Monday in Abuja, Jonathan called for prayers and compassion for those affected by the incidents while also emphasising the need for authorities to take steps to prevent future tragedies.
“The unfortunate incidents have left all of us in shock and sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends who have lost their loved ones and with those who have been injured,” he said.
Jonathan encouraged the government to provide immediate assistance to the victims and their families and to implement strategies to avoid similar occurrences.
The former president reminded Nigerians of the true essence of the Christmas season, highlighting love, unity and care for others.
“As we navigate through this painful period, I encourage all Nigerians to show compassion and solidarity, especially during this festive season. Christmas is a time of love, unity, and hope. It reminds us of the importance of caring for one another and working towards peace and harmony in our communities,” he added.
Jonathan urged citizens to extend a helping hand to those in need, fostering unity across all divides. He expressed hope that the festive season would inspire Nigerians to work collectively towards building a nation founded on justice, fairness and mutual respect.
