They didn’t want to sign me, May D details fallout with Psquare

Singer May D

Singer May D has opened up about his fallout with Psquare and their label, Square Records, alleging that the twin brothers hindered his opportunities, including a deal with Akon.

May D joined Square Records in 2011 but left on August 21, 2012, citing internal disputes.

Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, the 40-year-old revealed that trouble began during the shoot for the remix of “Chop My Money,” which featured Akon.

He claimed he was initially excluded from the video until Akon insisted on his involvement.

“Akon refused to shoot the video until I was in America. When I got there, he offered me several deals and promised to fly me back to the U.S.,” May D said.

However, he admitted that sharing this information with Psquare upon his return to Nigeria soured their relationship.

May D recalled that Psquare had initially been reluctant to sign him, preferring to assist him like they had done with J Martins and Bracket.

He believed the tension worsened after Akon expressed interest in him.

Reflecting on the experience, he said, “If I had known, I wouldn’t have told them about Akon’s offers. That was my mistake.”

This revelation follows a similar controversy involving Peter Okoye of Psquare and British-Nigerian artiste Darkoo.

Over the weekend, Darkoo accused Peter of having her music video for Focus on Me—which sampled Psquare’s 2009 hit Gimme Dat—removed from YouTube despite securing clearance.

Darkoo alleged that Peter was dissatisfied with her promise to feature him in a remix and claimed she “disrespected him.”

This led to the video being taken down for six days, disrupting its release.
