Mojisola Meranda emerges Lagos first female speaker as lawmakers sack Obasa

Mojisola Meranda

Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has been sworn in as the new speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of multiple statutory and financial infractions.

Mr Obasa, who had served as speaker since 2015, was accused of financial misconduct, including the alleged spending of N17 billion to fix a gate leading to the assembly complex. His removal marks the end of a tenure increasingly mired in controversy over financial dealings and political arrogance.

Following his impeachment, his deputy Meranda was sworn in as the new speaker.

Meranda, who previously served as the chief whip of the assembly, makes history as the first female speaker of the Lagos legislature.

Mojeed Fatai was named the new deputy speaker, succeeding Meranda.

Meranda took her oath of office immediately after the assembly’s decision, pledging to lead with integrity and prioritise the legislative duties of the house.
