Funke Egbemode elected acting president Nigerian Guild of Editors

Managing Director/Editor in Chief of New Telegraph, Funke Egbemode, has been elected Acting President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) after Garba Deen Muhammad voluntarily relinquished his position following his appointment as Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“At exactly 1.49am today (Saturday), I emerged Acting President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors. Thank you for your support. Thank you,” the prominent columnist wrote in a message shortly after her emergence at the second quarterly Standing Committee Meeting of the association held in Abuja.

Qed.ng recalls that Mrs Egbemode was elected Vice President (West) of the NGE at the All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC) held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, in August 2015.

Former Managing Director of National Mirror, Steve Ayorinde, was also elected Deputy President at the 2015 ANEC.

Muhammad emerged President at the Conference after Femi Adesina, relinquished his position as NGE President following his appointment as Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity.

The seat of the President became vacant again with Muhammad’s appointment as NNPC spokesperson and Ayorinde’s emergence as Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

Before joining New Telegraph, Egbemode worked as Editor of Sunday Sun and Saturday Independent.

She also worked with Punch and ThisDay among other publications.

Outside the newsroom, she served as Special Adviser on Media to former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Olubunmi Etteh, and aide to former Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Omotayo Omotosho.
