Jose Mourinho won his first silverware for Manchester United on Sunday evening at the Wembley Stadium after beating Leicester City 2-1 in the Community Shield.
It didn’t take Zlatan Ibrahimovic long to make his mark at United, as the Swede’s late winner was enough to defeat the Premier League champions.
The Red Devils, who won the FA Cup but failed to qualify for the Champions League last season under Louis van Gaal, brought in the striker to spearhead a new-look United under new boss Mourinho, and it certainly paid dividends.
Although it was Ibrahimovic who would eventually decide it, Jesse Lingard fired United ahead in the 32nd minute.
The 23-year-old dribbled past several players and found his way in front of Kasper Schmeichel before firing home to open the scoring.
The lead carried over into the second half, but it only took the Foxes seven minutes after the restart to level the score.
Marouane Fellaini’s disastrous back pass failed to reach David De Gea, opening the door for Jamie Vardy to collect the ball and slot home in the 52nd minute.
From there the match looked destined for extra time as both teams failed to carve out clear chances, but with seven minutes left, Ibrahimovic made his mark on his competitive debut for the Red Devils.
The Swede, who looked to be in an offside position, headed past Schmeichel to secure his first trophy with United, while also helping Mourinho get one over on rival Claudio Ranieri ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.
