Nigeria’s Dream Team were outclassed 2-0 by a superior German side in Wednesday’s semi-final at the ongoing Rio Olympics.
It was an off day for Samson Siasia’s side who simply didn’t show up despite the massive support they received from Brazilian fans at Arena Corinthians, Sao Paulo.
The Nigerians will now battle Honduras for the bronze medal while Germany face host, Brazil for the top price.
But why did the Dream Team VI fail to click when it mattered most? We examine four obvious reasons.
- Tactical deficiency
As proven throughout the tournament, Nigeria has struggled to match tactically gifted sides. The Dream Team were destined to lose once the game kicked off with the way they lined up. The Germans flooded the midfield with more players which made it very difficult for the Nigerians to break. Due to a packed middle, the Die Mannschaft made it completely impossible for the Africans to even pass the ball which is where their strength lies.
- Udoh for Okechukwu
Azubuike Okechukwu’s suspension from the game against the Germans gave way for Ndifreke Udoh. Okechukwu, Nigeria’s deputy skipper, might not have made the headlines the way Oghenekaro Etebo and John Obi Mikel have, but his influence in the middle of the pack is equal to none. His replacement did very little on the night and looked jittery each time he got the ball.
- Lack of squad depth
Nigeria’s lack of squad depth became glaring after Siasia lost both Etebo and Okechukwu. The pair were replaced by Aminu Umar and Udo, who looked anonymous and lost. The team lacked an impact player and were practically clueless after the Germans neutralised their playing system.
- Eagles were star-struck
The Germans came to the Olympics with an experienced bunch already playing top flight football across Europe. The team skipper, Max Meyer, at 20, is already a full international and has made over 90 appearances for Bundesliga side Schalke 04 with 16 goals. Also the Bender brothers, Lars and Sven, are both senior internationals. Arsenal man, Serge Gnabry, adds to the list of superstar players in the German team.
