It’s been a somewhat fairytale run for Plateau United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season.
From striving to retain their top-flight status last term, the Jos-based club found themselves in an improbable terrain after seven games.
Plateau were unbeaten in the league and top of the log with 17 points – scoring 12 goals – the most in the league thus far.
However, the club were finally brought back to reality by Akwa United on Sunday – a team who had only won once prior to their meeting.
The Promise Keepers defeated Plateau 2-1 thus inflicting a first league defeat on the club.
Christian Pyagbara and Ibrahim Alhassan put the home team in front but Chima Ndukwu goal wasn’t enough to spark a remarkable comeback from Plateau.
Despite the defeat, the visitors remained top of the log – three points above ABS who are in second while Akwa moved to 14th with nine points.
Plateau will most definitely be aiming to return to winning ways once again when they face Niger Tornadoes on Sunday.
