Nigerians have reacted to a viral video showing the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu II, disrespecting the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at a public function.
The video was recorded during the official opening of the 22nd World Conference of Banking Institutes hosted by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos on Tuesday.
In the short clip, guests at the event were seen paying respect to Oba Adeyeye as he entered the venue.
Already seated were the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, and Akiolu.
Upon entering, the Ooni walked up to greet the two monarchs, but while Achebe greeted him warmly, Akiolu, a retired police officer, rejected Adeyeye’s handshake and dismissed him with a wave of the hand.
The action of the Lagos monarch has been roundly condemned by Nigerians as can be seen in the tweets below.
Ooni is the Emperor of Yoruba land. Everybody in that hall, including the Oba of Lagos and all, were supposed to stand as he walked in.
