The nominees for the 2017 edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) were announced on Sunday with Nigerian box office hit, The Wedding Party, conspicuously missing on the list.
It was the same with AMAA’s main competitor, Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), for which the Kemi Adetiba film also did not get a single nomination.
Responding to inquiry by Qed.ng, a member of AMAA jury, Shaibu Husseini, said the film was not entered for nomination.
“We didn’t have it on the submission slate. And we only select and judge films entered by filmmakers for the award.
“We don’t judge films based on their popularity or based on recommendation. They must be properly entered. Entry forms completed and signed,” Husseini wrote in a text message.
The Wedding Party, starring Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Sola Sobowale, Alibaba, Ireti Doyle and many other heavyweights, was premiered on September 8, 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and on November 26 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
Other films premiered in the same period like ’76 and 93 Days made strong showings on AMAA and AMVCA nomination lists.
