Super Eagles goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, has made his first appearance in public since news of his medical condition broke last week.
The 31-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers man was diagnosed with acute leukaemia and is now set to stay away from the game indefinitely.
The sad news of his health drew overwhelming support from the football fraternity which has left the Nigerian with a heart filled with gratitude.
“Just wanted to say thanks for all the messages that I have received since being diagnosed with Leukaemia this week,” Ikeme wrote on Instagram, Sunday.
Despite the likelihood of never playing again, the ex-Leicester City goalie vowed to give it a fight.
Ikeme will begin chemotherapy as he kick-starts the battle against the deadly cancer.
Hence, he will play no part in his club’s 2017/18 season and won’t be available for Nigeria’s games.
Ikeme, who became Super Eagles No.1 in 2015 following the sudden retirement of Vincent Enyeama, has made 10 appearances for the national team.
At club level, the goalie has spent his entire career at Wolves but had some spells away on loan.
