Nigerian-American actress, Yvonne Orji, has vowed to remain a virgin until marriage.
Orji, whose character, Molly, in HBO’s television series, Insecure, indulges in a lot of sex, explained this in an interview with People.
The 33-year-old devoted Christian said she is always more than willing to explain her decision to anyone who inquires.
“People ask about it because they’re curious, or they may not understand,” she said.
Orji continued, “How will they ever get understand if I don’t talk about it? I can inform your curiosity, as opposed to everyone being in the dark and just sort of creating their own narrative about it.”
The actress said before venturing into Hollywood, she had a conversation with God on the path He’d want her to tow while in the movie industry.
She said: “Before any of the fame happened, I sat down with myself and with God and thought, when I make it, how do you want me to represent you while I’m here?”
Orji, who emigrated to the U.S. from Nigeria at age six, with her family added: “It was the traditional immigrant story of my parents wanting the best for us and bringing us here,” but life in Maryland wasn’t always easy.
“I was bullied because I have this thick Nigerian accent, my mom would say, ‘We didn’t come to America for you to be popular.’ Which is fair, but as a kid, you’re just like, it would be really nice to have this thing that everyone else has.”
Before acting, Orji attended George Washington University where she got a master’s degree in public health.
While her parents had hoped she would become a doctor, Orji shocked her family when she announced after college that she wanted to be a stand-up comedian.
“[I told them] it would take me eight years to become a doctor, but give me eight years to make it in entertainment. And I’m happy to say, we did it in seven,” she said.
