World football ruling body, FIFA, has launched an investigation into the behaviour of Zambian fans in the 1-0 defeat to Nigeria.
The Chipolopolo missed the opportunity to feature at the FIFA World Cup for the first time after slipping against the Super Eagles on Saturday.
But it appears more trouble awaits the South African nation who could be on the receiving end of FIFA’S wrath.
Some section of Zambian supporters were spotted in the stands with banner saying “E.C. LUNGU GOD BLESS YOU2 in support of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
FIFA frowns at political messages during games, which means that Zambia could be fined by the governing body at the end of the inquiry.
Claudio Sulser, head of the Disciplinary Committee, was quoted as saying by Zambian Observer: “Keeping in mind that the rules need to be applied in a neutral and fair manner across FIFA’s 211 member associations, the display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited.
“In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else.”
Whatever the outcome, Nigeria’s ticket to Russia remains irrevocable.
