A 59-year-old man, Gabriel Bassey, was on Wednesday remanded in prison on the orders of an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping and impregnating a 14-year-old girl.
Chief Magistrate Folakemi Davies-Abegunde refused the bail application of the accused and remanded him in Kirikiri Prisons.
Davies-Abegunde directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The accused, who resides at Ijegun, a Lagos suburb, is facing a two-count charge of sexual assault and rape.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in December 2017 at his residence.
Donny said the accused lured the girl to his room on the pretext of giving her some food, shut the door and raped her.
“The accused raped the girl and threatened to kill her if she tells anyone.”
Donny said when the girl’s mother noticed that she had missed her menstrual cycle and asked her.
“She told her mother what happened. She was taken to the hospital and was confirmed pregnant.
“The accused was later arrested for questioning,” he said.
The offences violated Sections 135(1) and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that rape carries life imprisonment in Lagos State.
The case was adjourned until February 26.
