Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Ibadan on Thursday sentenced a 21-year-old drug peddler, Femi Oyelami, to 10 months in imprisonment for trafficking in 1.1 kg of `Indian Hemp,’ otherwise known as Cannabis Sativa.
Ayo-Emmanuel said that he convicted and sentenced Oyelami based on the evidence before him and the fact that he pleaded guilty to the offence.
The judge ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Command, to destroy the harmful weed found with the convict.
Earlier, Mr Raphael Himinkaiye, counsel to the NDLEA, had told the court that the convict faced a one-count charge bordering on unlawful dealing in `Indian hemp’.
Shedding more light on the matter, Himinkaiye explained that Oyelami committed the crime on January 23, at the Total filling station at Ojoo in Ibadan.
He added that when the operatives of the NDLEA apprehended the convict, he was found to be carrying a bag containing 1.1 kg of the illicit drug.
According to the Prosecutor, the offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
Oyelami, a father of one, had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.
He also told the court that he was a barber by profession and that his parents were both late.
