Arsenal are through to the quarterfinals of the Europa League after beating AC Milan 3-1 on Thursday night and 5-1 on aggregate in their round-of-16 second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Hakan Calhanoglu had Milan in front in the 35th minute with a dipping, swerving strike from distance that left David Ospina no chance in the Arsenal goal.
But minutes later, Arsenal were back on level terms when Ricardo Rodriguez was questionably deemed to have fouled Danny Welbeck in the penalty area, with the latter dispatching his spot kick to make it 1-1 at the break.
Milan came out of the dressing room needing two goals to draw level in the tie, but it was again Arsenal that looked more likely to score.
And Arsene Wenger’s men found their second just past 70 minutes when Gianluigi Donnarumma parried Granit Xhaka’s shot from distance back into his own net when he should have kept it out.
Welbeck added gloss to the result with his second goal of the night, nodding home from close range after Aaron Ramsey’s header from a Jack Wilshere cross had been saved by Donnarumma.
Arsenal will now await their quarterfinal opponent, which will be revealed during the Europa League draw on Friday afternoon at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
