A Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a 32-year-old mechanic, Peter Audu, to one month in prison for stealing from a church.
Audu, who resides at New Nyanya, Nasarawa State, was sentenced on a count charge of theft, an offence he admitted committing.
The Magistrate, Mr Chukwuemeka Nweke, however, gave the convict an option of N5, 000.
The convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
He said that he committed the offence because he needed money to erect a headstone for his late mother’s grave.
The Magistrate admonished him to be of good conduct and desist from criminal activities.
He warned him that the court will not be lenient if he appear before it next time.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Donatus Abah, had told the court that on March 18, while a team of policemen were on patrol, they arrested the convict with some items.
Abah told the court that an industrial fan, three microphones, one wall clock, drum set and a bag containing some fabric were discovered with the convict.
Abah said that during the police investigation, the convict confessed to having stolen the items from a Redeemed Christian Church of God, opposite NIA, Garki, Abuja with the intention of selling them.
He said that the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.
