Egyptian forward, Mohamed Salah, has signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool, snubbing reported interest from Real Madrid.
The striker arrived at in England from Roma last summer for a fee of around £39 million. He gained the admiration of fans around the world after scoring 44 goals in 52 appearances, the second-best record in the club’s history.
The ex-Roma man’s impact was felt immediately, taking the club all the way to the Uefa Champions League final in Kiev against Real Madrid.
Salah scored 32 goals in the English Premier League, earning the Egyptian the Golden Boot award for top scorer. He was also voted the Liverpool’s player of the season and won both the PFA and football writers’ awards.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said the signing shows a commitment to the club:
“I think this news can be seen for what it is; rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season,” the manager told the club’s website.
“It demonstrates two things very clearly also – his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him.
“We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions – we are working hard together to achieve this.”
Salah’s World Cup was short lived. After sustaining a shoulder injury in the first minutes of the Champions League final, the Egyptian was on the bench for their first game.
The striker played in two of the games, but his World Cup campaign was cut short after Egypt failed to qualify for the last 16, finishing bottom on Group A with no points.
