Afrika Shrine transformed as Fela’s granddaughter, Rolari, weds

Rolari Segun Yeni daughterThe interior of the New Afrika Shrine in Alausa, Ikeja wore a different look Saturday.

Gone were the usually boisterous fans doing “clear road for jaga jaga” or dragging in their smoke of choice.

It was indeed a special day as Rolari, the first granddaughter of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was handed over to her Australian beau, Benedict Jacka, in a traditional marriage ceremony.

The 26-year-old is the daughter of Fela’s first child, Yeni Kuti, and late diplomat and communications guru, Femi Segun.

With yellow and white as official colours, the ceremony commenced around 1:00 pm with members of the bride and groom’s families from near and far in attendance.

Members of the Jackas family travelled from the United Kingdom and their native Australia.

Eminent Nigerians including politicians, entertainers and businessmen also joined in the celebration.

Bride’s uncle, Femi Kuti, and his Positive Force band entertained guests.

Naturally, Fela’s songs formed part of the repertoire with which guests were entertained.

The second leg of the wedding, which will be a more formal affair, is slated for August 13 in London.

Rolari graduated from the University of Leeds in UK while Benedict studied Philosophy at Cambridge University.

The bride’s maternal grandmother is popular author, poet and National Merit Award winner, Mabel Segun, whose publications include My Father’s Daughter, Under the Mango Tree, Olu and the Broken Statue, The Twins and the Tree Spirits and Sorry, No Vacancy.
