Court remands suspected killers of ex-FUTA VC in maximum prison

Suspected killers of ex FUTA VCA Chief Magistrate Court in Akure on Wednesday ordered that the suspected killers of former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Albert Ilemobade, be remanded at the Olokuta Medium Prison until September 18, when the case will resume.

Daniel Ita Effiom, 24, and Olayemi Bamitale, 36, were arraigned on a five-count charge of murder and robbery.

They however could not take their plea because they had no lawyer to represent them.

Ilemobade’s body was found decaying in a store  at Ijapo, seven days after he was killed.

Police Prosecutor, Isah Atanegbe, told the court that investigation revealed that Effiom and Bamitale conspired to commit murder by strangling the deceased to death at his residence in Ijapo Estate, Akure, on the 21st of June 2015.

The offence according to him is contrary to and punishable under section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap.37 Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

Reading the charges against the accused persons, Mr. Atanegbe said, “That you Daniel Ita Effiom and Olayemi Bamitale on the 21st June 2015 at about 9pm at No. 1 Ikere Street Ijapo Estate committed felony to wit: murder and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap.37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Daniel Ita Effiom and Olayemi Bamitale on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did kill one Professor Albert Adeoye Ilemobade by jointly strangling him to death and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of Criminal Code Cap.37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Daniel Ita Effiom and Olayemi Bamitale on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did conspire together to commit felony to wit: robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 403A of the Criminal Code Cap.37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo state of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Daniel Ita Effiom and Olayemi Bamitale on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did rob one late Professor Albert Adeoye Ilemobade Rav 4 Jeep 2008 model with registration number Lagos GGE-589-CF valued yet unknown and the sum of seven thousand naira property of late Professor Albert Adeoye Ilemobade and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 401 of the Criminal Code Cap.37 Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.”

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the suspected killers in prison custody until the outcome of a legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

Presiding Chief Magistrate, Victoria Bob-Manuel, thereafter ordered that the two men be remanded in prison until the case resumes for further hearing.
