The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has pulled out of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).
SDP spokesperson Alpha Mohammed announced in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
Mr Mohammed did not state the party’s reason for quitting the group of over 45 opposition political parties.
It is however believed to be connected to the party’s refusal to be associated with the decision of the CUPP leadership to endorse Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar as consensus candidate.
Mohammed also stated that his party which has former Cross River State governor Donald Duke as its presidential candidate would begin campaign on December 19.
“SDP pulls out of CUPP, kick-starts campaign on 19th December…: Details later,” Mohammed wrote.
Shortly after Mr Abubakar’s endorsement, the SDP distanced itself from the union, claiming it had never taken any step to that effect.
Mohammed had issued a statement to say that the “SDP National Working Committee (NWC) will meet and issue appropriate statement on the matter next week.”
