Man locks family in dark room, beats up mother-in-law

A 35-year-old man Seun Okwuyigbo on Wednesday appeared in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for beating and injuring his mother-in-law in the eye.

The police charged Mr Okwuyigbo with assault.

The prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the accused committed the offence at No. 7, Shifawu Street, Ikosi-Ketu on December 14.

Mr Ihiehie said the accused beat up his mother-in-law Tolani Bisiritu who was trying to find out from her daughter the reason why her husband locked her and the children in a dark room.

Mrs Bisiritu is 65 years old.

Ihiehie said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The offence is punishable with three years’ imprisonment.

Okwuyigbo pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him.

Magistrate E. Kubeinje admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, adjourning the case until February 11, 2019.

Kubeinje ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government.
