Police uncover multi-million naira fake wine factory in Lagos

Lagos State police has uncovered a multi-million naira fake wine producing factory of a 47-year-old man Uju Ughanze at Aboru area of Oke-Odo.

The state’s police commissioner Edgal Imohimi said on Wednesday that the command had acted swiftly on intelligence it got about the factory on Tuesday.

“Based on the information, I directed the Area Commander Area ‘P’ Alagbado to mobilize to the scene, search and seal off the factory,” Mr Imohimi said.

The police recovered 4,000 bottles of already produced, packed and labeled adulterated wine of different brands; 1,000 empty bottles; drums of different sizes; various chemicals and reagents used as raw materials and other tools used in the production of fake wine/beverages.

Mr Ughanze, a native of Obosi, Anambra state, revealed during interrogation that he owned the uncompleted one storey building where the illicit drinks were produced.

“Investigation further revealed that the said Uju, a Secondary School dropout, has neither the requisite qualification nor licence to embark on this type of business,” the police chief added.

Incidentally, the factory served both as a production base and residence for Ughanze, his wife and four children.

The command consequently advised Lagosians to be wary of the consumables they buy especially at this yuletide season “as peoples of Uju’s ilk may have flooded the market with sub-standard goods.”
