Lennox Lewis believes “protected” superstar Anthony Joshua does not want to fight Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury.
The undefeated, unified heavyweight champion of the world somehow managed to miss out on the biggest fight in the division as Wilder and Fury battled to a terrific draw earlier this month.
A unification fight with WBC champion Wilder was rumoured for this summer, although the contract sent over by the ‘Bronze Bomber’s team was deemed unsatisfactory and the fight never materialised.
As accusations were hurled between teams and backroom staff members, Joshua instead faced mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin while Tyson Fury stepped in after three years away from the world stage to fight the American in Los Angeles.
The contentious result led many to call for a rematch in 2019, meaning Joshua is in danger of again being a gooseberry in the equation yet again if the two towering heavyweights agree to fight once more.
According to Lewis – the last undisputed heavyweight champion in history – Joshua does not want to fight either man and a second fight between Wilder and Fury is the fight fans deserve.
“Anthony Joshua can wait,” he told CompuBox. “He doesn’t want any of those guys!”
“When he saw that fight, he was like ‘Wow, these guys can box’.
“And now they’re going to do it again – he’s at one place in his career and in boxing.
“Obviously he can make the decisions that he can make and his decision is not to fight any of them at this moment.”
