President Muhammadu Buhari has shortlisted an Adamu Mohammed, an assistant inspector-general of police from Nasarawa State as a replacement of inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris.
Mr Idris, who clocks 60 years on Tuesday, January 15 paid a visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa on Monday.
The police chief is expected to retire from service on attainment of the mandatory 35 years in service or 60 years of age.
His replacement should be named on Tuesday, with AIG Mohammed high on the shortlist.
If he gets the nod, it means the deputy inspectors-general of police (DIGs) ahead of him will be required to retire.
“Yes, the IGP Ibrahim Idris is retiring tomorrow and possibly an acting Inspector-General maybe named very soon.
“But I will advise that you wait for official statement to that effect,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted a source as saying on Monday.
Idris, who was an AIG when he was appointed by President Buhari on June 21, 2016, replaced Solomon Arase, who retired from the police force on same day.
Born on November 9, 1961, Mohammed enlisted in the police in 1986. He has a bachelor degree in geography.
He was at one time a director of peacekeeping operations. He is a former police commissioner in Enugu and was an AIG in charge of Zone 5.
Mohammed is currently a directing staff member at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State.
He has served for several years with Interpol, the international law enforcement outfit that has Nigeria as a prominent member.
