Empire star, Jussie Smollett, was on Tuesday attacked by unidentified assailants in Chicago.
The 36-year-old entertainer was taking a walk through the city when two people attacked him, tied a noose around his neck, yelling racial and homophobic slurs.
The attackers also poured “an unknown chemical substance” on the actor according to the police.
Although the police didn’t name the actor in their report, Smollett’s fellow cast members and production company, 20th Century Fox Television, identified him as the victim.
News of the early morning attack left the entertainment world reeling.
Gay advocacy groups have also spoke out in support of the 36-year-old actor.
The actor and singer was reportedly in Chicago for a scheduled Saturday concert.
Reacting to the attack, 20th Century Fox Television said in a statement, “The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate — and especially against one of our own.”
The actor is reported to be recuperating in Northwestern Hospital in Chicago.
