A yet-to-be-identified woman was on Friday found dead along Umuabai Afara road, Umuahia, Abia State.
Residents of the area said they woke up Friday morning only to see the corpse by the roadside.
Some of the residents say they suspect the victim was to be used for ritual purpose but was probably dumped for fear of being caught.
Abia police spokesperson, Geoffrey Ogbonna, has confirmed the incident.
Mr Ogbonna said the body has been evacuated, and that investigation to identify the deceased and arrest her killers had commenced.
A female police officer with the Human Rights Department from World Bank Police Station, who led other policemen to evacuate the corpse, said they were doing the evacuation because health workers of the Umuahia North local government area were on holiday as declared by the federal government.
The officer, who did not want her name mentioned, said the corpse would be deposited in a morgue within the state capital.
