The National Peace Committee (NPC) led by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, on Thursday night, met with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

The closed-door meeting, which was also attended by former head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, was held at Atiku’s Asokoro residence.

Atiku’s running mate, Peter Obi; Senate President Bukola Saraki; PDP Chairman, Uche Secondus; House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, and other PDP leaders were also in attendance.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Rev. Fr Atta Barkindo of the NPC Secretariat were also part of the meeting.

After the meeting with the PDP leaders, the NPC moved to the presidential villa to hold talks with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The meetings come barely 24 hours after Atiku rejected the results of the presidential election held on Saturday, calling it a sham, and vowing to challenge the results in court.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting with Atiku and the PDP leaders, Abubakar said his committee decided to address the disagreement, given its mission to ensure there is peace in the country.

“Currently now, tensions are high and we need to see how we can douse the situation. We have come to listen to the grievances from the PDP. We will continue shuttling to see how we can make sure that the peace is maintained,” he said.
