Suspected herdsmen on Thursday in Enugu State killed a senior lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, Dr Nnamdi Ogueche.
Ogueche was allegedly shot dead along Iwolo Road, Ezeagu local government area of Enugu, on his way from a peace meeting between his kinsmen and Fulani herdsmen in Uzo-Uwani.
Reports say the meeting was summoned by the special adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on security matters, Fred Eze.
Ogueche was said to have attended the meeting as the administrative secretary of the Uzo-Uwani local government council to mediate over the issue of destruction of yam barns in Adaba, his community, and Umulokpa, which the community attributed to herdsmen.
His death comes less than 24 hours after the decomposing body of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Clement Ugwu, was found in a bush.
The priest had been kidnapped on March 13 in another community, Obinofia Ndiuno, in the same local government (Ezeagu).
Enugu police commissioner, Sulieman Balarabe, confirmed the killings, promising to find the killers and bring them to justice.
He also paraded five herdsmen alleged to be involved in kidnapping in the state.
Mr Balarabe also paraded seven other suspects arrested for other alleged crimes.
